Ahoy! The year of the Fisherman Aesthetic is officially here. The fashion world and Pinterest tell me this is the year of the fisherman, which means it’s the year that all my coastal and maritime loving friends are completely in our element. I have no doubt an actual fisherman is wondering why us fashionistas love this aesthetic, but we do. If you love classic, coastal, New England/Scottish/Swedish type style, then this look is for you. We are talking warm chunky knit sweaters, maritime stripes, wellies, rain jackets, and many, many layers. I feel like my winter wardrobe has been waiting for this moment and it’s ready to shine.
I think it will come as no surprise that my Scottish roots are here for this look. At its core this vibe is really a nod towards the sea and a desire to reconnect with the simplicity of living near the water. The look is going to be very laid back, practical, and functional, as anything a fisherman wears needs to be able to withstand harsh weather and working conditions. It’s cozy meets everyday wearability meets coastal charm. If you are ready for a breath of salty air, then let’s dive in.

How to Get the Fisherman Look
If you love a New England coastal look, the fisherman look will be just your thing. Look for pieces with stripes, woven details, and colors of blues, greens, yellow, and bright red. Here are a few items you will want to search for in your wardrobe to complete this look.
- Maritime stripes in red or navy
- Chunky cable knit sweaters
- Wellies (Wellington Boots)
- Boat Shoes and Fisherman Sandals
- Rain Jackets
- Linen pants or shorts
- Netted or woven bags
- Sea inspired jewelry: shells, mermaids, sardines
- Bucket hats
- Knitted hats
Where to Shop for the Look
I would first try shopping your wardrobe! Chances are you already have a striped shirt, a warm cable knit sweater, rain boots, rain jacket, and cozy winter hats. If you need to replace or purchase any of these items, I suggest investing in a quality brand. All of the styles of the fisherman aesthetic are classic and timeless so you will no doubt wear the items for years to come. Some of my favorite timeless brands are J.Crew, J.Crew Factory, Quince, St. James, Ralph Lauren, Kiel James Patrick, and Tuckernuck. I created a collection of styles I own and love here.
How I’m Wearing this Look
Below you’ll see me styling this look a few different ways. Every item I’m styling I’ve had in my closet for years! I always chat about classic style and why I love it and this is why. This aesthetic is so incredibly timeless and because I’ve been transitioning my wardrobe to classic pieces for years, I didn’t have to spend a dime on this “trend” (the fashion world calls this a trend but surely we all agree it’s a timeless look right?!). If you love my rain jacket, this one is from one of my favorite coastal small businesses, Erie and Anchor. And my boat shoes are from a Maine based family owned business called Eastland Shoes! (p.s. if you love the boat shoes or need a good pair of loafers, use my code SSOLT for 10% off at Eastland Shoes!)
