Timeless Fashion Essentials: Invest in Classic Style

We all know that one of my favorite topics to chat about is classic style. This idea of investing in quality pieces that are timeless in design came to me about a decade ago. When I was younger I enjoyed chasing the trends. Even in fashion school my priority was on being trendy and fashionable. However, as I entered my thirties, I found myself reaching for styles that were timeless and classic and that transcend the test of time.

What does classic style really mean though? Typically when we talk about classic style we mean “less is more.” It’s typically a style that is simple and not over done. Classic styles have no expiration dates and are usually immune to trends, like a khaki trench coat, blue denim jeans, or a white tee. Classic styles are the pieces that you reach for again and again.

But it’s not all about the actual piece. Classic style evokes a feeling. It’s nostalgic, comfortable, and effortless. Classic style are pieces that are worn, used, and loved to their fullest. They are pieces that we love and feel good wearing. At the end of the day, what you wear should make you feel confident, empowered, and ready to take on the world. Classic style allows us to trust our instincts and embrace what we love.

Below I’m sharing some classic styles that are favorites in my wardrobe. Some are newer pieces, but some I’ve worn for almost a decade. In addition to these styles, other classic pieces that are classic and timeless include: the little black dress, a white button down shirt, a tailored blazer, a trench coat, cashmere sweaters, straight leg jeans, pearls, leather handbags, loafers, and riding boots.

But first, we chat about how to spot a quality, classic piece.

What to Look For When Buying Quality Pieces

Materials Matter

If you are serious about investing in classic, timeless pieces, pay attention to what a garment is made of. For example, garments made from cotton, wool, cashmere, linen, and silk extend the longevity of the item. Personally I feel like the items in my closet that are made of 100% cotton or linen or cashmere are far more comfortable to wear than something that is made of polyester or another synthetic fabric.

Brands Matter

These days I’m very invested in supporting brands that align with my values. This means I’m looking for brands that create high quality clothing that are ethically sourced, sustainable, and that support diversity and inclusion. Right now some of the brands I like to shop are Quince, J.Crew, Banana Republic, Lands End, TJ Maxx, Sarah Flint NYC, Tuckernuck, and Nordstrom. Also remember that shopping small, second hand or thrifting offer some opportunities to find beautiful, vintage pieces that are incredibly timeless.

My Top Seven Classic Pieces

The Cotton Fisherman Sweater

If there is only one classic piece you want to add to your wardrobe this year, it should be the classic fisherman sweater. This is the most classic of sweaters and you can wear it all year round! I have this 100% cotton one from Quince and it’s my absolute favorite. I wear it on a weekly basis winter, spring, summer and fall. Pair it with denim or linen pants, wear it to the beach with shorts, or throw it on over a dress. It’s insanely versatile and a piece you’ll wear for years to come.

The High-Waisted Straight Leg Denim Jean

Denim trends come and go and every year we hear of a different style that is all the rage. But if you want a pair of denim jeans that will never go out of style regardless of trends, then you should invest in a classic straight leg style. J.Crew Factory is my favorite place for jeans. I find it to be affordable and the denim holds up really well. The fit is also great for my 5’3″ frame (although sometimes I do cut off the hems to make them ankle length).

The Raincoat

When you live near the Great Lakes, a good raincoat is a must! We get a lot of lake effect weather and so having a jacket that is waterproof or water-resistant is always a good idea. I have a classic navy and white striped one from Erie and Anchor that I LOVE. But J.Crew, Quince, and Land’s End all sell high quality ones in really fun colors. Below are a few that I’ve been loving.

The Classic Gingham Button Up

If you are a regular follower on my Instagram page you will know that I love gingham. I have more gingham button ups than I care to admit but it’s a style that I wear all year round. J.Crew Factory is my go-to for a button up gingham shirt and they always have tons of colors throughout the year ranging from classic navy to pink to yellow to purple and green. I love to wear mine with white denim because they pop. But you can also style them during the winter underneath a classic crewneck sweater for a pop of print/color.

The Linen Pant

Every Nancy Meyers loving soul knows that the linen pant is a staple for a classic, coastal wardrobe. Linen is a great fabric to wear during the hot months because it’s breathable and naturally heat-regulating. I own two pairs of linen pants, one in white and one in a blue pinstripe from Quince. I would love to add another pair in flax (sort of a light tan/khaki color). It’s a pant that you can wear April through September that is easy, chic, and timeless.

The Striped Tee

Ah the infamous striped tee. My personal belief is that you can never have enough striped tees. Striped tees are always chic, timeless, and in style. Pair them with denim jeans or linen for an ultra classic look. I have about a dozen or more stiped tees (short and long sleeve) and all of them are on rotation all year long. I love ones from J.Crew Factory, but Gap, Saint James, Boden, Alice Walk, and Tuckernuck all have great quality striped tees. Below are a couple of my favorites.

The Ballet Flat

Even as a mom on the go, a classic ballet flat is a shoe I wear regularly. I love how easy it is to slip them on and go. And they always add an extra layer of chicness to an outfit. If you are only looking to add one pair to your wardrobe, opt for one in cognac or nude. If you already have those colors, a woven raffia flat or blush pink is a great addition to a classic wardrobe.

A few other classic pieces that deserve a notable mention in this post include the classic chambray button up, tortoise sunglasses, road trip sneakers, a striped lady cardigan, a plain white tee, and a white button down.
